Acronym: An acronym is one of the abbreviation kinds and means in old greek "heads of names". Acronyms are usually built from the initials of the words it represents. e.g. FAO: Food and Agriculture Organization.
Abbreviation, on the other hand, is a shortened form of a written word or phrase e.g. org for organization.
